Why [are] Well-Read Mom group[s] important? One reason is that we long to preserve what is good, true and beautiful from our western tradition. Sometimes we mistakenly think that to save something we need to build walls of protection around it. But it is just the opposite, at least in this case, to preserve what we love, it needs to be communicated.

Reading literature together is not a small thing. It is a contagious way to communicate truths about the human condition. One book at a time, our moral imagination is being educated to a greater truth of reality. And why is this important? I firmly believe that to become a culture of life we need imaginations that are well-formed.

Literature helps us see the world through a wider, yet more focused lens. We come to understand our own need, and we grow in empathy for others. Reading great books is a key to cultural change.

And cultural change is what is happening. Not only is Well-Read Mom impacting the lives of the women participating, but it is also, in a small but real way, beginning to ripple into the culture.
