Dr. Sarah Kostick

Picture
You could say that Sarah Kostick, the oldest of eight children, was the first data point in her parents’ relatively successful homeschooling experiment. Sarah went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Michigan Technological University, a Master of Science in Applied Plant Sciences from the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D in Horticulture with an emphasis in plant breeding from Washington State University.

By day, Sarah works as a plant science researcher, but in her “free time,” she is deeply involved in youth and young adult ministries in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Passionate about the pursuit of truth and our universal call to sainthood, she strives to help others grow in faith, virtue, and authentic friendship—no matter their state in life.

Presentation:
1:30 p.m. Saturday (Room 1506): VIRTUOUS FRIENDSHIPS: HELPING TEENS BUILD MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS
God created each of us for relationship—not only with Him but also with others. We are made for community. As St. Thomas Aquinas said, “There is nothing on this earth to be prized more than true friendship.” True friendship is good, beautiful, and holy, yet as children grow into teens and young adults, navigating friendships—especially in today’s world—can be challenging.
As homeschooling parents, we have a unique opportunity to model virtuous friendship in our own lives and to help our children cultivate relationships rooted in virtue, including friendships between men and women.
Sarah Kostick, an introvert and not a psychologist, does not claim to be an expert—but through her own (ongoing) journey toward virtuous friendship and her experience in youth ministry, she has gained practical insights that can help parents and teens alike. This talk will explore the nature of virtuous friendship, why it’s essential to have open conversations with your children about relationships, and practical strategies—including setting healthy boundaries—to help you and your teen foster meaningful, Christ-centered friendships.

On-campus Lodging

Many conference attendees stay on campus for the conference.  Morrison Hall is located adjacent to the Anderson Athletic & Recreation Center (AARC). Each unit in Morrison Hall includes four bedrooms (one twin-sized bed in each bedroom),  two private bathrooms (with showers) located between two bedrooms, and a common area:  living room and kitchen (with full refrigerator/freezer and microwave).  Units are air-conditioned. Married couples may share a unit. UST Housing staff will assign roommates for those not reserving an entire unit.  Roommate requests will be considered, but are not guaranteed. To be sure you share a unit with a specific roommate, book an entire unit.   If you do not want to share unit or if you have want specific roommates, you should reserve and pay for a whole unit.

Only four guests can stay in any unit.  The only exception is that you can have up to two children under the age of 4 in addition as long as you provide a crib, pack-and-play or other bed option for them.  Any children ages 5 or older will be assigned a bedroom.

A set of linens (towels, sheets, blanket, pillow) are supplied for each person. (Note that you must bring things like shampoo & conditioner, soap, blow dryer, cups, glasses.)  Check-in Thursday, May 31 (after 6 p.m.) or  Friday, June 1 (after 3 p.m.).  Checkout by 5 p.m. Saturday, June 2 or noon Sunday, June 3. UST Housing Staff will handle check in and check out at Koch Commons.  All rooms are non-smoking and alcohol is not allowed  in the dorms.  Children may not be left unattended in the dorms. Keys must be returned to Koch Commons ($50 charge for each lost key).

If you are staying on campus, park in the Morrison Ramp:
Located beneath Morrison and Flynn Residence Halls, visitors parking in the Morrison ramp should enter campus at the intersection of Selby Ave. and Finn St. Follow the drive aisle south.  Koch Commons is on your right when you are under the skyway.)  After checking in, continue toward the stadium. Take a hard right at the end of the drive aisle. The visitor ramp entrance is the eastern entrance beneath the residence hall.
